Shareema Abel

 

Shareema Abel serves as Special Counsel to the Inspector General.

Ms. Abel comes to the Office of the MTA Inspector General after serving as Special Counsel for Ethics, Risk & Compliance for the New York State Civil Rights Portfolio, and oversaw Risk Management at 4 New York State agencies. As a gubernatorial appointee, Ms. Abel was a member of a strategic and forward-thinking team of Special Counsel across the State who identified risks, opportunities for improvement, ensured high ethical standards, and tracked issues that affected significant agency and Statewide operations. Ms. Abel’s career in public service began with the City of New York where she served i​​​​​n 2 key capacities for over 16 years; first as an Assistant District Attorney for the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, then as a Senior Litigation attorney with the New York City Department of Education practicing labor and employment law.


Ms. Abel has been an instructor for the National Institute of Trial Techniques for over 10 years, teaching trial and deposition skills to attorneys throughout the United States and internationally. In 2018, in collaboration with Lawyers Without Borders, Ms. Abel trained Kenyan prosecutors and assisted with establishing the Prosecutor’s Training Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. Ms. Abel is an Adjunct Professor at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies teaching collective bargaining and labor law. Ms. Abel has also guest lectured at New York University on the subject of Ethical Leadership and Team Building.


Ms. Abel received her JD from Hofstra University School of Law and her BA from SUNY Binghamton. She is admitted to practice in New York State and the United States Supreme Court.
